How do I choose the right stick flex?
Stick flex refers to the amount of force (measured in pounds) required to bend the shaft of a hockey stick by one inch. Selecting the correct flex can help maximise both the power and accuracy of your shots, while improving overall puck control.
A good starting point: Choose a stick flex that's approximately half your body weight in pounds.
For example: A player weighing 170 lbs would typically use an 85 flex stick.
Recommended Stick Flex by Player Weight
- Under 100 lbs → 40–50 flex
- 100–130 lbs → 50–60 flex
- 130–160 lbs → 65–75 flex
- 160–190 lbs → 80–90 flex
- 190+ lbs → 100–110+ flex
Other factors to consider
- Strength: Stronger players may benefit from a stiffer flex for increased stability and power.
- Shooting style: Players who rely on quick-release wrist and snap shots often prefer a lower flex for added responsiveness.
- Playing position: Forwards commonly choose a lower flex to enhance shot release, while defencemen may opt for a higher flex to generate more power on slap shots.
Enity Hockey Tip
- Intermediate sticks: Typically range from 55–75 flex
- Senior sticks: Typically range from 75–110+ flex
Not sure which flex is right for you? The team at Enity Hockey is always happy to help you find the perfect stick to match your size, playing style, and performance goals.
How often should I sharpen my skates?
How often you need to sharpen your skates depends on how frequently you skate, your playing style, and the ice conditions. As a general guide, most players follow these recommendations:
Typical sharpening frequency
- Regular players (1–2 sessions per week): Every 10–15 hours of ice time.
- Frequent players (3+ sessions per week): Every 5–10 hours of ice time.
- Beginners: Every 10–15 hours, or whenever the edges begin to feel dull.
- Outdoor or softer ice conditions: More frequent sharpening may be needed, as blade edges tend to wear down faster.
Signs your skates may need sharpening
- You're slipping or finding it harder to stop.
- Turns feel less controlled than usual.
- You need to work harder to grip the ice and hold an edge.
- The blade edges feel rounded rather than crisp (avoid touching the sharp edge directly).
Enity Hockey Tip
If you're unsure whether your skates need sharpening, bring them into Enity Hockey. Our experienced team can inspect your edges, recommend the right hollow for your skating style, and ensure your skates are performing at their best.
Regular skate maintenance not only improves performance and confidence on the ice but can also help extend the life of your blades.
